Myanmar is in the western most corner of all South-eastern Asian countries. Political disturbance and civil war in past had not allowed the growth of tourism sector. European Council on Tourism and Trade is planning to hand Myanmar the “World best Tourist Destination Award” for 2014.

The recommended means of travelling to Myanmar is through flying. International flights to Myanmar are limited but there are direct flights from many Asian countries to Yangon. Yangon International Airport receives the largest international flights. Second international airport is Mandalay.

Myanmar has tropical monsoon type of climate. The season could be classified in this manner-monsoon season from May to October with very heavy rainfall, summer season from March to April with unbearable heat and humidity and cool and dry winter season from November to February.

The best time to visit Myanmar is between November and February because it less hot and rainy. Avoid visiting Myanmar from March to May as it is extremely hot and humid then.

Due to political reasons, tourists are not permitted in many regions of Myanmar. Nevertheless, the areas permitted have rich archaeological sites, ancient cities and nature trails. Recently, European Council on Tourism and Trade will hand Myanmar the  “World best Tourist Destination Award” for 2014. Yangon, Bagan, Mandalay, Inle Lake and Kengtung are some popular tourist destinations. You will also find some exotic beaches in Myanmar like Ngapali, Ngwe-Saung and Mergui.

The time difference between India and Myanmar:

India is 1:00 hour less than Myanmar. For example if India is 22:56,Thurday,March 13,2014 then Myanmar will be 23:56 Thursday, March 13, 2014.

The unit of currency of Myanmar is Kyat. The banknotes are produced in denominations of 1, 5,10,20,50,100,500,1000 and 5000 Kyat. Money can be exchanged in hotels and authentic moneychangers. Please receive kyat in good condition only otherwise they become useless. Certain transactions in Myanmar can be done in US Dollars like air and railway booking, hotel accommodation, entrance fee for archaeological locations, international departure tax, International IDD calls and gems and jewellery. Credit cards and travel cheques are basically useless in Myanmar.

Burmese is the national and the widely spoken language of Myanmar. The language is officially referred as Myanmar by the government and is also called Bamar.It is related to Tibetan and Chinese language and is spoken by 90% population of Burma. English is not widely spoken except in airports, hotels and tourist sites. However, you might find some people with the rudimentary knowledge of English.

Burmese culture has been heavily influenced by Buddhism and Mon people. Theravada Buddhism is followed by 80% population. The music,art,dance,literature and language has been influenced by Buddhism. The national epic of Myanmar is the Yama Zatdaw which is an adaptation of India’s ‘Ramayana’ and has been greatly influenced by Thai, Môn and Indian versions of the play. The influence of British colonialism can be felt in the language and education system of Myanmar.

While visiting Myanmar it is always good to taste some local cuisine. A typical Burman cuisine consists of a bowl of rice accompanied by curry, soup and a plate of blenched vegetables. However this is not the only thing. Fish sauce and Ngapi(fermented seafood) is widely used in the cuisine. Coastal cities like Sittwe,Kyaukpyu,Mawlamyaing,Mergui and Dawei are good in terms of seafood.Lahpet is a popular dish and Mohinga the national dish of Myanmar.

Yangon nightlife is the best in whole Myanmar. Yangon is not as flourishing in nightlife as Thailand but it too has some safe nightclubs where you can hangout at night for live music, dancing and drinking. Nightlife outside Yangon is fairly less due to electricity black-outs and poverty. However, there are many beer stations and restaurants open in the rural areas till 9pm. They are austere in outlook but good for beer and a glass of rum.
