Thailand officially the Kingdom of Thailand, formerly known as Siam, is a country located at the centre of the Indochina peninsula in Southeast Asia. It is bordered to the north by Burma and Laos, to the east by Laos and Cambodia, to the south by the Gulf of Thailand and Malaysia, and to the west by the Andaman Sea and the southern extremity of Burma. Its maritime boundaries include Vietnam in the Gulf of Thailand to the southeast, and Indonesia and India in the Andaman Sea to the southwest.

The country is a constitutional monarchy, headed by King Rama IX, the ninth king of the House of Chakri, who, having reigned since 1946, is the world's longest-serving head of state and the longest-reigning monarch in Thai history. The king of Thailand is titled Head of State, Head of the Armed Forces, Adherent of Buddhism, and Upholder of religions.

Thailand is the world's 51st-largest country in terms of total area, with an area of approximately 513,000 km2 (198,000 sq mi), and is the 20th-most-populous country, with around 64 million people. The capital and largest city is Bangkok, which is Thailand's political, commercial, industrial and cultural hub. About 75% of the population is ethnically Thai, 14% is of Chinese origin, and 3% is ethnically Malay; the rest belong to minority groups including Mons, Khmers and various hill tribes. The country's official language is Thai. The primary religion is Buddhism, which is practiced by around 95% of the population.

Thailand experienced rapid economic growth between 1985 and 1996, and is presently a newly industrialized country and a major exporter. Tourism also contributes significantly to the Thai economy. There are approximately 2.2 million legal and illegal migrants in Thailand,[13]and the country has also attracted a number of expatriates from developed countries.

Bangkok

Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is a city located at the north of Thailand. India is 1:30 hours less than Thailand. For example if India is 23:01, Thursday, March 13, 2014 then Thailand will be 00:31 Friday, March 14, 2014.

 

The unit of currency of Thailand is Baht(THB) and 100 satang makes 1 Baht. The notes come in the denominations of 10 baht,20 baht,50 baht,100 baht and 100 baht. Money can be exchanged in banks, airports and rarely available moneychangers.US Dollars and British pounds is mostly accepted while exchanging baht. Credit cards like American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard and Visa is accepted in big hotels and restaurants.

Thai is the official language of Thailand. It is spoken in different dialects in different provinces. Various dialects of Chinese are spoken by people belonging to Chinese communities in Thailand. English is a compulsory subject in standard schools of Thailand.However, it is not widely spoken and understood by Siamese in many areas. Thai people own some spirit houses in which they believe household spirits reside and they should be kept happy. Other religions include Muslims, Christians and Mahayana Buddhists. Thai customs are very unique. The common greeting address is “wai”,which is accompanied by ‘Anjali Mundra’ and a slight bow. The person younger greets first and his/her greeting is returned by the elder in the same way. The customs are also strict about the respect of elders by the younger generation.

 

Thai cuisine gathered popularity in 1960s when Thailand became an international tourist destination. Presently,it is one of the most popular cuisines in the world. Thai cuisine consists of a blend and balance of variety of stuffs in a single dish yet making it very harmonious and light. Thai food is known for its blend of four fundamental tongue senses –sour, sweet, salty and bitter. The Thai food basically consists of noodles, soups, fried and stir fried dishes, salads, curries, rice dishes, grilled dishes and suaces. Some popular Thai cuisines are Tom Yang Goong, Som Tum, Tom Kha Kai, Gaeng Daeng, Pad Thai, Khao Pad, Gaeng Keow Wan Hai and Yam Nua.

 

Nightclubs are not to be missed while visiting Thailand. You will find some trendy discos and seaside nightclubs which play beautiful numbers accompanied with mouth-watering cocktails. Thailand has some strict rules regarding the nightclubs and bars. Bangkok nightclubs are open till 1a.m. after which they are closed. One must be 20 years old to visit the nightclubs and bars.
